“My covenant was with him, one of life and peace, And I gave them to him that he might fear Me; So he feared Me And was reverent before My name.” (Malachi 2:5 NKJV)
What does it mean to have reverence for God? It means we honor, love, and respect God and acknowledge His immense power. Having reverence is not just a feeling it will also reflect in our words and actions. However, in order to have reference for God first we must have the fear of the Lord. You can say yes to Jesus Christ and not have the fear of the Lord in you. When I say fear I don’t mean it in a bad way where you are scared of God. Instead I refer to loving God and Jesus so much that you do not want to purposely do things that you know will break Their hearts. It looks like being willing to die to the flesh continually (not literally) and letting the Holy Spirit transform us inside and out so that we can look more like Jesus everyday. It also looks like keeping all of God’s commandments and instructions for us. We are choosing to be righteous and do good instead of wicked and evil. The fear of the Lord helps us accomplish God’s will for us and walk in obedience towards Him, Jesus, and others. The fear of the Lord will keep us close to the heart of God and Jesus.
“Then those who feared the Lord spoke to one another, And the Lord listened and heard them; So a book of remembrance was written before Him For those who fear the Lord And who meditate on His name.” (Malachi 3:16 NKJV)
“But to you who fear My name The Sun of Righteousness shall arise With healing in His wings; And you shall go out And grow fat like stall-fed calves.” (Malachi 4:2 NKJV)
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, But fools despise wisdom and instruction.” (Proverbs 1:7 NKJV)
“The fear of the Lord is to hate evil; Pride and arrogance and the evil way And the perverse mouth I hate.” (Proverbs 8:13 NKJV)
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” (Proverbs 9:10 NKJV)
“The fear of the Lord prolongs days, But the years of the wicked will be shortened.” (Proverbs 10:27 NKJV)
“In the fear of the Lord there is strong confidence, And His children will have a place of refuge. The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life, To turn one away from the snares of death.” (Proverbs 14:26-27 NKJV)
